  • DESCRIPTION: Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxt. J. Jones sculp. Francis Hargrave (c.1741 - 1821) was born in London and is most known for his involvement as an advocate for James Somerset in 1772 trial that determined the legal status of slaves in England. Following the case Hargrave would go on to have a career in legal history and would collect and publish many books relating the subject. Upon his death in 1821 the British Government purchased his collection and had it placed in the British Library.
