DESCRIPTION: The legion top and bottom were cut off by Paul Revere in 1775 so he could use the backside of the copper plate to print currency for Massachusetts. On the verso are engraved 10, 12, and 18 shilling notes. The plate has been printed repeatedly through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. According to Brigham, early impressions show a lot of scratches and "smooches." This version is cleaned up but not reworked as more modern impressions are.
